Our social skills group program
helps children
promote positive peer relationships!
Communication and cooperation skills are essential.
Confidence builds when a child can communicate and work well with others. Teasing and other types of social adversity are better dealt with by the child who is more socially adept.
The goals of our groups are to:
-
increase communication (verbal & non-verbal) and cooperative skills
-
develop impulse control
-
learn perspective and develop empathy
-
deal with conflict
& strategies for teasing
-
increase language development
and communication through play and conversation
Character traits are emphasized: respect, responsibility, perseverance, empathy, and self-control. Leaders deal with negativity and poor self esteem head on and address specific problems and teach tools and strategies for dealing with conflict, teasing, peer rejection and pressure, and social stress. We
also cover making good choices, and choosing good friends.
The results are worth talking about!

In a group, children are able to learn and practice social skills with same-aged peers. Peer groups and their social interactions occur in real time, like a real situation in the school setting or at home, but a group is controlled, so leaders can teach, guide, and intervene as needed. Positive
reinforcement is given to encourage children. Positive changes occur because there is less fear and stress than a real live situation in a classroom or playground. Children try newly
learned behaviors with feedback from peers.
Who?
Groups meet for
children at age intervals described below. These groups meet the social
development needs of children having difficulty interacting with their
peers. These may be children in the regular classroom with no other issues
or those with: shyness, issues making friends, difficulty with
communicating, issues with anxiety, ADD/ADHD, impulse control problems, emotional issues, pervasive developmental disorders, high functioning
autism, sensory integration disorder, or Asperger's disorder.
Sprouts
I Club : ages 4-first grade Sprouts II
Club: Grade 2 - Grade 4
Booster
Club I: Grade 5-7 Booster Club II:
Grade 8/HS We
have plans for a "just girls club" too, call for details. When?
Children attend group sessions for a period of five or six weeks. Groups meet on
different days depending on our schedule and group enrollment. Some groups
meet weekdays, others meet Saturday mornings or Sunday afternoons. Our Booster Clubs are often scheduled on weekday
nights, Sprouts are often on Saturdays. Additional group time can be arranged
with children wishing to extend relationships more
closely: ie: playdates, friendship building, etc.
Group Size?
There are no more than 5-6 children with one leader. The minimum group size
is two (2). We use visual cueing, reflexive language, group language
experiences, role playing, scripting, and other multi-sensory approaches to aide
language, emotional, and social development in social settings. Our leaders
backgrounds vary across behavioral science, child development,
social work, and
special education -all with experience working with children of special needs
in this type of setting. We pay careful attention to parents and child
wishes to be with specific peers or not.
Cost?
Our goal in
all we do is to offer comprehensive services to families at a price they
can afford.
Social Skills Groups range from $200-
$250, depending upon how many sessions fall within a group class period (5
or 6). Includes all materials and snacks. Please contact
us for more information regarding cost and session dates and times. All of
this information is included on our program schedule. Our groups are
run by a special educator and social worker. We do not
accept Medicaid or insurance. You will find our social skills groups are
affordable on their own. We
are confident you'll be amazed by the cost, flexibility in scheduling, and
results!
